Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853–1890) was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter who took up art seriously only in his late twenties, after failed careers as an art dealer, schoolteacher, and lay preacher. The ten years that followed produced more than nine hundred paintings and over a thousand drawings — an output of almost supernatural intensity. He sold exactly one painting during his lifetime. Today his works command some of the highest prices in auction history.

His early canvases, made in the Dutch countryside and the mining communities of Belgium, are sombre and heavy, full of sympathy for labourers and the rural poor. Everything changed when he moved to Paris in 1886 and encountered the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. His palette transformed overnight. He moved to Arles in 1888 seeking light and warmth, and it was there — in barely two years — that he produced 'Sunflowers', 'The Bedroom', 'The Night Café', and, in the asylum at Saint-Rémy, 'The Starry Night'.
