About Vincent van Gogh's Paintings

Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853–1890) was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter who took up art seriously only in his late twenties, after failed careers as an art dealer, schoolteacher, and lay preacher. The ten years that followed produced more than nine hundred paintings and over a thousand drawings — an output of almost supernatural intensity. He sold exactly one painting during his lifetime. Today his works command some of the highest prices in auction history.

His early canvases, made in the Dutch countryside and the mining communities of Belgium, are sombre and heavy, full of sympathy for labourers and the rural poor. Everything changed when he moved to Paris in 1886 and encountered the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. His palette transformed overnight. He moved to Arles in 1888 seeking light and warmth, and it was there — in barely two years — that he produced 'Sunflowers', 'The Bedroom', 'The Night Café', and, in the asylum at Saint-Rémy, 'The Starry Night'.

Famous Paintings by Vincent van Gogh

  • The Starry Night (1889) — swirling night sky over Saint-Rémy
  • Sunflowers (1888) — several versions, painted for the Yellow House
  • Irises (1889) — painted in the Saint-Rémy asylum garden
  • The Potato Eaters (1885) — his sombre Dutch masterpiece
  • Almond Blossoms (1890) — painted for his newborn nephew
  • The Bedroom (1888) — the simple domestic space he craved
  • The Night Café (1888) — clashing reds and greens of unease
  • Café Terrace at Night (1888) — Arles under a star-filled sky
  • Wheatfield with Crows (1890) — one of his final canvases
  • Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear (1889)

Why Vincent van Gogh Paintings Endure

Van Gogh's achievement was to make visible the emotional weight of the world — to paint not what the eye sees but what the nervous system feels. His broken, impasto brushwork and his saturated, non-naturalistic colour were not technical choices but expressive necessities: the thick ridges of paint in 'Starry Night', the urgent directional strokes across a wheat field, record a sensibility under extraordinary pressure. That rawness reads immediately across cultures and generations.

His letters to his brother Theo — among the most remarkable documents in art history — make clear that every formal decision was deliberate and thought through. He understood exactly what he was doing. The swirling sky in 'The Starry Night' is not the product of mental illness but of a painter who had absorbed the lessons of Impressionism, Japanese printmaking, and his own Dutch tradition and pushed them all to a new limit. That synthesis became foundational to Expressionism and influenced nearly every major movement of the twentieth century.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are Vincent van Gogh's most famous paintings?

Van Gogh is best known for 'The Starry Night' (1889), his Sunflowers series (1888), 'Irises' (1889), and 'The Potato Eaters' (1885). His 'Almond Blossoms', 'The Night Café', and 'Café Terrace at Night' are also among the most recognised paintings in Western art.

  • What makes Van Gogh's style unique?

Van Gogh's distinctive style combines thick, textured impasto brushwork with colour used expressively rather than descriptively. He applied paint in short, energetic, directional strokes that give his canvases an almost physical pulse. His non-naturalistic colour — saturated yellows, deep blues, vibrant oranges — was chosen for emotional resonance, not literal accuracy.

  • Was Van Gogh successful during his lifetime?

No. Van Gogh sold only one painting during his lifetime — 'The Red Vineyard' (1888). He lived in poverty, supported almost entirely by his brother Theo, a Paris art dealer. His reputation was established posthumously, growing rapidly from the 1890s onward, largely through the efforts of his sister-in-law Jo van Gogh-Bonger who preserved his letters and promoted his work.

  • How many Van Gogh paintings does Mojud hold?

Around 176, covering the full span of his career from the dark Dutch paintings through the Parisian period, the Arles masterworks, the Saint-Rémy canvases, and the final works at Auvers-sur-Oise.

  • Can I download Van Gogh paintings for free from Mojud?
