The story
Captain Frans Banninck Cocq leads his civic-guard company forward in a swirl of motion — Rembrandt's vast 1642 group portrait turning a static official picture into pure drama. The famous nickname came later, when darkened varnish made it look nocturnal; restoration revealed it's actually a daylight scene.
