The story
Saint Peter stands in a courtyard by firelight as a maidservant challenges him, while Jesus is interrogated in the lit room behind. Rembrandt painted this in 1660, the hand shielding the candle becoming the dramatic centre of the picture — Peter is about to deny he knows Christ.
