The Conspiracy of Claudius Civilis
The story
The one-eyed Batavian chieftain Claudius Civilis swears his followers to revolt against Rome by torchlight. The largest canvas Rembrandt ever painted, made around 1661 for Amsterdam's new town hall and based on Tacitus. The city rejected it and the surviving fragment was later cut down for sale.
