The Procuress
The story
A bordello scene: a young woman in yellow takes coins from a customer while a procuress watches and a man (perhaps Vermeer himself) grins. Painted in 1656 — his first signed dated work, in a manner closer to Utrecht Caravaggism than to his later style.
