The Execution of Maximilian

The 1867 execution by firing squad of Maximilian, the man France had installed as emperor of Mexico. Once Napoleon III pulled his troops out, Maximilian was left to Mexican republican forces, who shot him. Manet's quiet accusation against France meant the painting was banned from public view in his lifetime.
