Boy with a Sword
The story
A small child in seventeenth-century dress grips a sword and scabbard far too big for him. The model was Léon Leenhoff, Manet's likely illegitimate son. The painting borrows openly from Velázquez's portraits of royal children, but the tone is frank rather than sweet.
