The Boy with soap bubbles

A teenage boy blows soap bubbles against a plain dark background. Painted by Manet in 1867, the boy is Léon Koëlla-Leenhoff, the son of Manet's future wife Suzanne. The bubble is a centuries-old symbol of how brief life is — borrowed from Chardin and other earlier painters.
