About Post-Impressionist Art

Post-Impressionism is not a single style but a generation's worth of experiments conducted on top of what the Impressionists had made possible. Between the 1880s and the early 1900s, painters who had learned from Monet and Pissarro pushed their discoveries in different and sometimes contradictory directions. Paul Cézanne used structured brushwork to analyse how the eye constructs depth and volume. Vincent van Gogh loaded his canvases with swirling colour and charged line to externalise emotional states. Paul Gauguin flattened form and saturated his palette to evoke a spiritual world beyond the visible surface. Georges Seurat reduced colour to a systematic science.

What connects these artists is a shared conviction that painting could do more than describe the visible world — it could interpret, distort, or transform it in service of feeling or idea. Their discoveries fed directly into every major development of twentieth-century art, from Fauvism and Expressionism to Cubism and abstraction.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Post-Impressionism?

Post-Impressionism refers to several artists working in France between the 1880s and 1900s who extended Impressionism toward more personal, expressive, or structural ends. The main figures are Van Gogh, Cézanne, Gauguin, and Seurat — each took a different path beyond capturing fleeting light.

  • Where can I buy Van Gogh prints in India?

Mojud ships Van Gogh prints across India — The Starry Night, Sunflowers, Café Terrace at Night, and many more. Prints are made to order on matte fine-art paper or canvas, with free shipping to all major cities.

  • What is the difference between Impressionism and Post-Impressionism?

Impressionism focused on capturing light and atmosphere outdoors with visible brushwork. Post-Impressionists took this freedom further — Van Gogh used colour expressively, Cézanne analysed geometric structure, Gauguin introduced spiritual symbolism. Post-Impressionism was more personal, more varied, and more concerned with inner meaning.

  • What size Van Gogh print works best on a wall?

The Starry Night and the Sunflowers both work well at larger sizes — 18×24 inches or 24×36 inches — where the brushwork and colour intensity come through. For a bedroom or study, smaller intimate works like the self-portraits or the Bedroom in Arles reproduce beautifully at 12×16 inches.
