Where do we come from? Who are we? Where are we going?

A long frieze of figures and animals moves from a newborn on the right to a hunched old woman on the far left — a passage through Tahitian life. The three questions of the title are written in the upper corner. Gauguin painted it on rough sackcloth in 1897-98, after his daughter Aline died.
