Portrait of Meijer de Haan

Gauguin's friend, the Dutch artist Meijer de Haan, painted with intense eyes and large hands. A small bird beside him puns on his name ("haan" means rooster in Dutch), and the books at his feet hint at his religious and philosophical reading. Painted around 1889-90 when they shared a studio in Le Pouldu.
