The story
Berthe Morisot reclines on a sofa in white muslin, her head propped on one hand, languid but alert. Painted during the rough years of the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune. Critics savaged it when it was shown in 1873, but it is now considered one of Manet's great portraits.
