Le Polichinelle

Polichinelle, the hunchbacked clown of Italian comedy, in bright colour. Manet made this in 1874 as one of the first ambitious colour lithographs in French printmaking, using seven separate stones. The image was suppressed after a handful of prints because French police saw it as a caricature of the president.
