The Reader (Le liseur)
The story
An elderly man leans over a huge open book, completely lost in reading. The sitter is the painter Joseph Gall, an old friend of Manet. Painted in 1861 with quiet, muted colors that nod back to old Dutch portraits of scholars at their desks.
