About Claude Monet's Paintings

Oscar-Claude Monet (1840–1926) was a French painter and the defining figure of Impressionism — the movement that replaced academic convention with direct, sensory experience of the world. When a critic mocked his harbour canvas 'Impression, Sunrise' at the 1874 group exhibition in Paris, Monet adopted the label 'Impressionist' with pride. The name, the movement, and the painting are inseparable from him.

Born in Paris and raised on the Normandy coast, Monet trained his eye on the sea and the ever-shifting Channel light from childhood. He began selling charcoal caricatures as a teenager, came under the influence of the plein air painter Eugène Boudin, and from then on was committed to a single discipline: painting outdoors, in front of the subject, at the exact hour and in the exact weather that interested him. That commitment, sustained for sixty years, produced one of the most recognisable and beloved bodies of work in the history of art.

Famous Paintings by Claude Monet

  • Water Lilies series (1896–1926) — over 250 canvases of Giverny's pond
  • Haystacks series (1890–91) — light and season across the same subject
  • Rouen Cathedral series (1892–94) — the Gothic façade in mist, sun, and shadow
  • The Japanese Footbridge at Giverny (1899)
  • Women in the Garden (1866)
  • The Magpie (1868–69) — snow light and silence
  • Gare Saint-Lazare series (1877) — steam, glass, and industrial Paris
  • Poplars series (1891)
  • The Thames at Westminster and Parliament series (1900–04)

Why Claude Monet Paintings Endure

Monet's paintings do something rare: they make visible what the eye normally races past — the quality of light at a particular moment, the shimmer of water, the dissolution of solid form into colour and air. He wasn't painting objects. He was painting the experience of looking at them.

His series works prove the point. By returning to the same haystack or cathedral façade in different seasons and weathers, Monet showed that the subject was never the thing itself but the light falling on it. The haystacks glow gold in late summer and dissolve into blue shadow in winter. The Rouen Cathedral solidifies in morning sun and evaporates into violet mist at dusk. Each canvas documents a specific moment — and together they add up to something close to a theory of perception.

In his final decades at Giverny, painting the water-lily pond with severely failing eyesight, Monet produced canvases of extraordinary emotional power — raw, almost violent brushwork around forms that had become less representational and more elemental. The large 'Les Nymphéas' panels installed in the Orangerie in Paris directly influenced the American Abstract Expressionists — Rothko, Joan Mitchell — who looked back to the late water lilies as a founding precedent.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are Claude Monet's most famous paintings?

Monet is best known for his Water Lilies series (over 250 canvases), his Haystacks and Rouen Cathedral series, and Impression, Sunrise — the painting that gave Impressionism its name. His Japanese Footbridge at Giverny and his London Thames and Parliament series are also among the most recognised images in Western art.

  • What is the Impressionist style, and how does Monet embody it?

Impressionism rejected academic idealism in favour of painting directly from observation, outdoors, in natural light. Its hallmarks are loose visible brushwork, bright colour, and an interest in capturing momentary effects rather than stable compositions. Monet is its most representative practitioner — he worked en plein air throughout his life, and his series paintings are the clearest demonstration of what Impressionism was trying to achieve.

  • How many Claude Monet paintings does Mojud hold?

Around 156, covering the full span of his career from his early Normandy seascapes through the great series paintings to the late Giverny water lilies. You can browse all of them on this page.
