Vue de Collioure, par André Derain

The bay, hills, and harbour of Collioure turned into a flat mosaic of orange, yellow, and indigo. Derain spent the summer of 1905 there with Matisse, squeezing colour straight from the tube. Paintings like this earned the pair the nickname "fauves" — wild beasts — when they were shown in Paris that autumn.
