Vairumati, the legendary ancestor-goddess of Polynesia, sits bare-chested in front, flanked by attendants. A white bird gripping a lizard hints at the endless turn of life and death. Gauguin painted her in 1897 as a Polynesian Eve, the mythical mother of the islands.
