Christmas Night (The Blessing of the Oxen)

Women in dark Breton caps lead two oxen toward a roadside shrine in a snowy village. Gauguin painted this in the Marquesas around 1902-03, mixing memories of Brittany with motifs he had borrowed from Egyptian tomb carvings and a Javanese frieze. It was found in his South Seas studio after his death.
