Turner - Mercury and Argus, before 1836

Mercury lulls the hundred-eyed giant Argus to sleep with his pipes, while nearby a white cow with a red ribbon — really the captive girl Io — waits to be rescued. Turner painted this story from Ovid in 1836. Critics hated it; the young John Ruskin defended it passionately.
