The Spanish Singer (Le Guitarrero)

A guitarist in Spanish dress on a wooden bench, lit dramatically against a dark ground. Manet's fascination with Spanish theatre came partly from a Spanish dance troupe touring Paris at the time, partly from his deep love of Velázquez. This was his Salon breakthrough in 1861.
