The Smoker
The story
A man leans forward holding a pipe against a dark background, his costume vaguely seventeenth-century. The model was probably one of Manet's neighbours. Painted in 1866, the rich blacks and tans pay tribute to the Spanish painters Manet had seen in Madrid the year before.
