The Idol
The story
A dark, stiff figure stands between gnarled tropical trunks, its outline echoing the twisted wood around it. Gauguin painted it in 1898 during his second stay in Polynesia, calling up Oviri, the savage death-and-life deity he had also sculpted in ceramic.
