Tahitian: Pape moe

An androgynous young figure bends forward to drink from a small waterfall deep in the Tahitian forest. Gauguin painted it in 1893, near the end of his first stay in Polynesia. In his memoir he tied the scene to a forest encounter that had unsettled him.
