The Fighting Temeraire tugged to her last berth to be broken up, 1838

A small steam tug hauls the ghostly old warship Temeraire up the Thames to be broken up for scrap, the great ship glowing pale against a sky of furnace-red sunset. Turner painted this in 1838 — a farewell to a hero of Trafalgar, and to the age of sail itself.
