The Cliff of Aval, Etrétat

The famous chalk arch of the Porte d'Aval at Étretat on the Normandy coast. Painted by Monet in 1885, when he returned to Étretat and made about fifty canvases of the cliffs from different angles in the autumn and winter. Active brushwork conveys the shifting weight of water, wind, and afternoon light.
