The story
A dramatic cleft cut into the cliffs above the sea at Varengeville-sur-Mer in Normandy. Painted by Monet in 1882, built from loose, suggestive strokes that put light and air ahead of precise detail. The motif belongs to his long engagement with the Channel coast in the early 1880s.
