Polichinelle
The story
A brightly costumed Polichinelle — the hunchbacked clown of Italian comedy — strikes a pose. Manet painted this watercolour in 1873 for the Salon, and some viewers thought it looked like the newly elected president of France, Patrice de MacMahon.
