Mercury beheads Argus (Ovid, Met.I, 568-721)

The god Mercury creeps up to behead the giant Argus, who was supposed to be guarding the captive girl Io for the goddess Juno. Jordaens makes Argus an exhausted old man with his flute fallen beside him, not a monster — turning the myth into something earthy and human.
