Kügelgen's grave
The story
A deserted cemetery with a freshly dug grave in the foreground and a spade still planted in the earth. Friedrich painted this in 1821 after his friend, the portrait painter Gerhard von Kügelgen, was murdered. A private memorial in pictorial form.
