Gazebo (Gazebo in Greifswald)
The story
A man and woman stand with their backs to us inside a vine-covered arbour, gazing out at the spires of a Gothic cathedral. Painted in 1818, it's often read as a tender image of Friedrich's own new marriage to Caroline Bommer. The picture was lost in the Second World War.
