First Steps, after Millet

A child takes her first wobbling steps toward her father in a vegetable garden. Van Gogh copied this from a photograph of a drawing by Millet, then improvised colour over the top — he thought of his Millet copies as a musician's interpretation of a composer's work. Painted in January 1890.
