A tropical riverbank scene from Gauguin's 1887 stay on Martinique, with Black figures in the foreground. The painting romanticises the island and quietly leaves out the harsh reality of plantation life there. Gauguin later traded it directly to Van Gogh for two of his Sunflower studies.
