The Sacred Mountain

A monolithic idol stands on a volcanic hill behind a low fence trimmed with skulls. Gauguin painted this imaginary Polynesian sacred site in 1892 — by the time he arrived, most real Tahitian temples had long fallen into ruin, so he invented one.
