Amrita Sher-Gil Red Clay Elephant

An elephant painted in 1938 at Sher-Gil's uncle's estate in Uttar Pradesh, where she spent much of that year. Like its companion piece Elephants Bathing in a Green Pool, it shows the flattened, decorative handling she was borrowing from Mughal miniatures, with warm earth tones drawn from the surrounding landscape.
