Virgin and child

The Virgin holds the baby Christ, both figures rendered with soft, silvery skin tones. Massimo Stanzione, a leading religious painter in seventeenth-century Naples, painted this around 1645. He was so admired that contemporaries nicknamed him the Neapolitan Guido Reni.
