The story
A nude Tahitian girl lies face-down on a bed while a hooded figure watches from behind — the spirit of the dead. The model was Gauguin's young consort Teha'amana. Painted in 1892, with glowing flecks across the wall to evoke the wandering souls Polynesians feared after dark.
