The Cellist (Schneklud)
The story
Gauguin's friend, the cellist Fritz Schneklud, leans into his instrument with his eyes lowered, beard and brow drawn in firm dark lines. Painted in Paris in 1894. The sitter looked so much like Gauguin that for decades critics were convinced it was a self-portrait.
