Matamoe (Death), Landscape with Peacocks

Two peacocks rest in the lush grass while a Tahitian figure at the right swings what looks like an axe, framed by tropical trees and a distant hut. Gauguin painted it in 1892 from the village of Mataiea on Tahiti's south coast. The title can mean sleep, death, or olden times.
