The painter and printmaker Marcellin Desboutin stands with his dog in a dark interior. Desboutin was a regular at the cafes where the Impressionists gathered and sat for Renoir and Degas too. Painted in 1875, the picture was rejected by the Salon but has long been admired for its loose, casual handling.
