Raja of Kollengode 1937
The story
A commissioned portrait of the Raja of Kollengode in a high-backed chair, painted in 1937. Sher-Gil's mother was unimpressed and said the sitter looked like an ancient pope. Painted just after her South Indian tour, it draws on the influence of Mughal and Pahari court portraiture.
