A furious cockerel struts at the centre of a flock of hens, chicks, and exotic birds in a parkland setting. Hondecoeter, a Dutch specialist in bird painting, gave his subjects an almost human social life — quarrels, gossip, parental tenderness — and pictures like this filled the country houses of his patrons.
