Portrait of the Artist with the Yellow Christ

Gauguin paints himself between two of his own works — his Yellow Christ behind one shoulder and a grotesque ceramic self-portrait at the other. Made in 1890-91 on the eve of his first trip to Tahiti, the picture reads as a personal manifesto before his Pacific exile.
