Portrait of the Artist's Mother
The story
Van Gogh's mother Anna, painted in Arles in October 1888. He worked from a black-and-white photograph his sister had sent him and, frustrated by its lifelessness, brought her face back to life with greens, yellows and red lips against a bright background.
