Portrait of Paul Gauguin
The story
Van Gogh paints himself as a shaven, gaunt monk against a pale green wall. He inscribed it "to my friend Paul Gauguin" and sent it ahead to Brittany before Gauguin came to stay with him in Arles. Painted in 1888.
