Man in White 1935

A portrait of the philosopher Prem Chand, painted at Simla in 1935. The jury at the Simla Fine Arts Exhibition rejected the picture, so Sher-Gil — in protest — refused the prize the same judges had awarded her. The whole episode hardened her stance against British-influenced taste in Indian art.
