Hail Mary
The story
Mary and the infant Jesus are recast as Tahitians, with a yellow-winged angel revealing them to two local women in pareus. Gauguin painted this in 1891 soon after reaching Tahiti, mixing Catholic imagery with poses he had borrowed from photos of Indonesian temple carvings.
