Garden with butterflies

Van Gogh looks down into a patch of meadow plants alive with butterflies, treating it as a whole world in miniature. Painted at the Saint-Paul asylum in Saint-Rémy in 1889 — for him, the change from caterpillar to butterfly carried a deep personal meaning of starting again.
