The story
Temples, arches, and statues from all over Roman history crowd a golden imaginary landscape as the poet Ovid leaves Rome behind in exile. Turner painted this in 1838. He keeps Ovid himself ambiguous — maybe the figure being arrested, maybe just a name on a tomb. The setting sun does the rest.
