A Matador
The story
The bullfighter Cayetano Sanz stands posed with his red cape draped over one arm. Manet had watched him fight in Madrid in 1865 — his only trip to Spain. He gathered this painting with about twenty other Spanish-themed works for his own private pavilion in 1867.
